Program Notes
In this concert we do 60 years steps to the beginningof a rare ensemble: the clarinet trio, combining viola, piano and clarinet. Soit consists of a woodwind-, a string- and a harmonyinstrument and unit alltheir possibilities of expression.
Max Bruch (1838– 1920) composed 8 „pictures“ for his son, who was a wellknownclarinetist and wanted to perform a concert for the 7oth birthday of his fatherwith a work of him. Bruch composed in the conservative style of his time shortpieces. Not like the „neudeutsche Schule“ with Wagner and Liszt who wrote „Musik der Zukunft“ (musical drama andprogrammed music“), he did it in the traditional way: miniatures canatblemelodies with dramatic moments using the colours of the instruments in thedifferent ranges … without any programmatic predescrition.
Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856), who composed „Märchenerzählungen“ also like a lotof composers of the middle of the 19th century, was one of his idols. So it isinteresting to take a look of his style and idioms of using the possibilitiesof clarinet in the same genre of „Fantasiestücke“. The pieces composed in a thematic cyclewithout any concret programmatic intention, which would lead the imagination ofthe audience. Sixty years before it is not so overloaded with harmonic weight, with clear melodic structures but a rhythmically interesting wovenaccompaniment.
And in the beginning of this genre of trio compositionwe can find WolfgangAmadeus Mozart (1756 –1791). He was the first who wrote for this combination. Together with two ofhis friends he was playing the viola part by himself at the first performance. It is amazing how he used the range of expression of„his“ viola. The Trio openswith an Andante in which the piano, initially together with the viola, announces the theme, then capped by the clarinet, which is later entrusted withthe second subject, given to the viola in its re-appearance in the recapitulation. The second movement is a Minuet, with a Trio section that puts the violathrough its paces. The final Rondeaux opens with the principal theme played bythe clarinet. The movement includes a dramatic excursion into C minor for theviola and further brief opportunities for virtuosity in music of subtlerefinement and moments of poignant beautyinmusic written at the height of Mozart's career. So it is an outstandingcomposition in form and expression and conclude the concert with a bright smile and optimistic view towards theupcoming spring.
The Rechenberg-Trio will perform in their next concerts the other „Märchenerzählngen“ and „Fantasiestücke“ of this 19th century in a comparing and eachother complementing way. Dreaming together in a Spring night … looking forward … „Rechenberg Trio“.
